I’m a closet Xanadu fan and I’m finally going to see the live musical in NYC come February. My (ex-step) mom and I just exchanged embarrassing e-mails about how excited we are and how we can’t get the righteous jams out of our heads. She’ll be there on business and I’ll be there catching a cold.
If anything that should stop the IT Department from reading the more risque selection from the outbox regarding the visible panty lines I sport most of the time here at the office.
My fascination with Xanadu began a couple years ago when my dad’s new wife, Monica, slipped the record in along with the collection he kindly passed down to me. Like many things, it started out as a joke and quickly became a top shelf soundtrack staple in my weekend housekeeping rotation.
I can’t imagine anyone being turned off by a roller skating disco fantasy featuring the sweet sounds of the Electric Light Orchestra. Don’t bring another cloud to rain on my parade if that person is you.
I visited New York City once when I was 14 and saw all of the major tourist attractions. I even bought a Korn c.d. at the local Times Square Tower Records. What? That wasn’t in your travel guide?
This time around I’d like to visit:
-
The American Museum of Natural History
-
The writers of the movie, Kissing Jessica Stein, on the off chance that I’d also be able to give them black eyes.
-
The back seat of a Cash Cab where I will surely know the answer to every trivia question without fainting and win all of the money. Maybe fainting and not winning all of the money. Maybe crying.
Feel free to chime in if I’ve overlooked any important must sees.

I love Cash Cab! I want to visit NYC again, too – haven’t been since I was 15. My main itinerary would be to grab & eat 100 egg rolls from China Town.
Don’t bother with the Statue of Liberty, I can tell you that. Do wander through Chinatown. It’s like you walk up to the gate on an empty street, you go through the gate, and BAM you are in the hustlingest bustle you’ve ever seen. Love it! Also you would love the museum of natural history, and I also hugely recommend MOMA. I went last when it was in Queens and I had this surreal experience of standing in front of Starry Night with a Matisse behind me and a Picasso to my left, and hardly any security guards. Seeing Starry Night in person was life-changing, honestly, but knowing that no one could stop me if I walked up and licked it was EVEN BETTER. Now it’s probably in more of a “real” facility.
Also, I AM TOTALLY JEALOUS about you going to see a roller-skating seventies disco opera. You bitch.
Em, I wish you could come with me. I’ll likely be doing the museum alone, so I’ll have to send you illegal cell phone pictures from the Hall of Ocean Life.
Laura, I know first hand that you’ve dabbled in the theater department and that you’re a great roller skater. Should I find out where you can sign up for auditons or what?
Check out Jacks Coffee located at the South Street Seaport. Get their Hot Cocoa. Best in the world.
I’m a sucker for cocoa. I’m sure my cold, Southern blood will need it, too.
Thanks for the tip!
